Here in South Africa we hear the cry of the broken and lost, we see the tears of the enslaved, and this is how we are responding.
2010 Justice ACTs Project
*THE NEED*
Half of the 1.2 million children who are annually trafficked are African. The majority of these victims are between the ages or 5 and 15 and 90% are trafficked into the sex trade. Thousands of men, women and children are at risk of being trafficked into the sex trade in preparation for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (*IOM 2008, US State Dept, 2007). According to the most current US Consulate Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) both the South African government and law enforcement are far from able to address the problem. With no specific counter-trafficking legislation, the policing of this issue is becoming untenable.*OUR RESPONSE*
We intend to send 8 specially trained teams to 4 Stadium Cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein) where the trafficking trade is thriving. Each team member (5 to 7 per team) will have a specific training focus from one of the following 5 areas;
1. Intercession- each ‘intercessor’ will be trained on how to strategically pray and spiritually map each area in which the team is working
2. Prostitution Ministry - the aim will be to communicate with and minister to the victims who are already being exploited. The ultimate aim is to demonstrate to these people their true value in God.
3. Investigation - handling situations safely and following specific training, team members will collate any evidence the team manages to unearth and pass it on to a trusted police contact.
4. Traffic Proofing – empowering the most vulnerable for human trafficking with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and their children. Equipping the average person in South Africa to combat human trafficking in their own “at risk” communities.
5. Male Sex Tourism (MST) - The pertinent team members will be trained in this wholly specialised area to speak with and minister to Male Sex Tourists. (This is a ministry for males only.)
*OUR TEAMS*
Each of the 8 teams, consisting of 5 to 7 members (including one Justice ACTs representative) will stay in their designated Stadium City for 4 to 6 weeks. We are working with and gaining new contacts, guides and organizations with whom to partner in each Stadium City. Each Stadium City will have 2 teams arriving at different times.The first of these (the ‘Pre-Team’) will arrive in Cape Town by the 10th of May to start their training. They will leave for their destined Stadium City on the 17th of May and return to Cape Town around the 17th June. The objectives of the Pre-Team will be;
-Presenting Traffick Proof to local schools before the holidays begin
-Mapping the focus areas
-Intercession
-Contact buildingThe second team (the ‘Action Team’) will arrive in Cape Town for training on the 7th of June, meeting with the Pre-Team for an information exchange and debrief. Their return date to Cape Town will be city-specific, but will be approximately 4 to 6 weeks later. The Action Team’s main objective will be;
- To follow up the initiatives started by the Pre-Team
- Prostitution ministry
- Continuation of intercession
- Continuation of investigationA team of course can choose to stay for the entirety.
*OUR GOAL*
The aim of the 2010 Justice ACTs Project is to prevent human trafficking and raise awareness among the most at risk for it, investigate human trafficking and turn over information gathered to the local police, minister to prostitutes and male sex tourists, pray and possibly reach victims of human trafficking who may be more visible during the World Cup time as prostitution will be more out in the open. Through this information, man power and contacts gained, we intend to support local, long-term ministries, already on the ground and also to start new ministries provided there is sufficient interest and resources.
* * *WHAT WE NEED* * * *Scenario 1: Teams who would like to go- Teams of 5 to 7 people who would like to travel to the 4 different cities.
We are looking for teams who are either “Pre-Teams” (from May to June) or for “Action-Teams” (from June to July) or both. The teams should have different people with interests or maybe even experiences in the area of Intercession, Prostitution Ministry, Investigation or Male Sex Tourism (MST). The ability to do public presentations is key and drama would be a plus.
Scenario 2: People who would like to go- People who would like to facilitate and set up this project.
These people would arrive approx. 3 months earlier than the teams and would help to put all logistical things in place, followed by joining the teams on their trip.
